The Promises of God

For a christian to be balanced in their understanding of the bible, God, and everything else in the world...

They must put more weight on the promises of God instead of their own works.

When God has made a promise, the christian should always call this to mind, instead of focusing on their works.

The christian who doesnt do this, will find themselves believing and teaching others false doctrine.
Why is this the case?

For one, God is God. Man is not.

Even though there is a responsibility upon man to obey God, man is not God.

Man's work cannot over turn the promises of God.

The balance is not equal 50/50.

Let's look at some examples.

In Genesis, God makes a promise to Adam.

On the day that he eats from the fruit of the tree of good and evil - dying, he will die.

People who walk in error, will say that this is a conditional promise. That life and death is conditioned of the work that man does, which would be the eating of the fruit.

While it is true that there is a conditional element to the promise, the unconditional element has more weight to it.

Once adam ate the fruit, could he do anything to stop the promise of death from coming to pass? No he couldn't.

Why? Because the promises of God will come to pass.

Notice, this is why death didnt enter when eve ate the fruit. Who was the promise of death made to? Adam.

Who is responsible for death? Its not eve, nor is it satan. The bible tells us that it was adam.

But what do we see happen?

Just like those who dont put more weight on the promise of God, and walk in error - at seeing that eve didnt die when she ate the fruit - adam, did not bring to mind the promise that God made to him.

When he eats the fruit... dying, he would die.

----

Lets look at another example.

God promises that He would flood the earth, as creation has become so corrupted by the wickedness of men.

He commands noah to build an ark.

God even tells him how long it would be before the flood would come.

Is there anything that man could have done to prevent the flood? No

If noah didnt finish building the ark in time, would that stop God's plans? No

---

One more example.

God told abraham that his wife, sarah, would bear him a child.

God didnt initially say when that would happen.

Simply that it would happen.

Up to that point, they couldnt have children. They were going to make one of their servants their heir.

When God makes the promise, abraham believes Him. At this point, abraham was around 75 years old.

However, years pass, and sarah is still not pregnant.

God repeats the promise two more times.

By the time abraham is around 85, abraham no longer believes that his son will come from sarah, his wife.

His wife gives him, her servant to have a child with. Abraham's first son is born to abraham when he's 86.

He fully believes that this is the son that God has promised him.

Its about 13 years later, when abraham is 99, that God repeats His promise once again.

When he hears the promise, not only does he laugh at the thought of sarah having a child, but he lifts up ishmael as the one as if he's the promised child.

Did abraham's actions and disbelief in the promise of God, make God's promise void? Of course not.

The promise of God is a declaration of what will happen.

Even when there are aspects of the promise that are conditional, one must consider that the promise is a sure thing that will happen.

When we don't pay attention to the promise of God, our understanding of scripture becomes faulty.

We see this in our understanding of of esau and jacob.

Its often taught that jacob and his mother conspired and stole esau's birthright and blessing.

This is actually wrong. The promise of God was told to isaac and rebekah.

The blessing was rightfully for jacob, not esau.

Rebekah and jacob were walking according to the revealed will of God, according to the promise.

Esau and isaac, were not.

The blessing couldnt have been given to esau from day one, because of the promise of God.

This is why esau received the blessing he did, and jacob, the one he did.

The blessing comes from God. Its not simply speaking positive things over them, like many ppl do today.

Isaac was pronouncing the word of God to them. And God knew that jacob was pretending to be esau because isaac was going against the will of God by intending to give the blessing to esau instead of jacob.

----

The christian is called to be obedient to the commands of God.

God has created us for that purpose.

However, we must always aware of the promises of God given to us in the scriptures.

He promises to keep us. To never leave nor forsake us. That we cannot be lost or perish.

And that He will discipline us, as a loving father does to his child.

The promises of God are the revealed will of God for our lives.

They are the lamp to our feet and the light to our path.

When we place the proper emphasis on the promises of God, then and only then can we sing along with King David.

Psalms 23:1-6 (ESV)  The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.
He makes me lie down in green pastures.
He leads me beside still waters.
He restores my soul.
He leads me in paths of righteousness for his name's sake.
Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.
You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; you anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.
Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever.

Amen

Scripture Meditation

When Adam sinned, humanity was barred from eating the fruit from the tree of life.

But, through the life, death, and ressurection of Christ Jesus

Humanity is once again allowed to eat from the fruit from the tree of life.

Yet there are those who believe that even though the fruit is eaten, they will still perish.

Lord, help us to trust in your words and promises

Twitter Thoughts

Those who hope, or put their faith in their obedience to Christ's commands, as the reason why they are, or will be acceptable to God...

... do not know, or understand, the depths of their sins...

Nor, the incredible mercy and grace of the Lord, Christ Jesus

Anti-Calvinism

The easiest way for a christian to believe in the doctrines of grace, is to focus on the words of Christ in the gospels.
The greatest obstacle for the anti-calvinist...
...is not the reasoning of the calvinist...
...the numerous creeds and confessions throughout church history...
... the writings of calvin or other reformers...
... the writings of the early church fathers...
... not even the epistels of the apostles...
No, the greatest obstacle of the anti-calvinist, is the words of Christ Jesus Himself.
As its His words, taken seriously, which have truly become the solid rock of our faith.

Check Yo' self

Psalms 141:5 (ESV)  Let a righteous man strike me—it is a kindness; let him rebuke me—it is oil for my head; let my head not refuse it.

King David considered the physical correction and the verbal rebuke from a righteous person as kindness from the Lord

He understood that he wasn't always going to be right in his ways.

He understood that there would be times that he would need someone to come along side and help him to realise his error.

And that this help wouldn't always be gentle, but that even if the harsh words or being made to stop by some kind of physical action, is actually a blessing.

How different this is from a lot of christians today, where everybody must be gentle at all times

When a brother or sister sees another holding to false/dangerous/unorthodox/or even heretical doctrine, and the confront them in a stern or serious manner, a lot of christians will automatically take offense.

They will disregard the entirety of the correction, which David calls kindness from the Lord,  all because 'they didnt have to speak to me like that' or 'they dont have the right to come at me like that'.

The focus is completely taken off the corrective path/instructions given and put on how that correction was brought to them.

Dont get me wrong, im not saying that people are free to just walk up to us, slap us across the face, and tell us we must do something.

That's not what David is saying here.

David is recognising the chastisement of the Lord (Hebrews 12:5-11).

He recognises that the correction of the Lord comes in both a kind word as well as a harsh word. A gentle push in the right direction or being grabbed by the scruff of the neck if need be.

Both ways are kindness from the Lord.

We should have this mindset within us. After all, if we truly believe that God is sanctifying us, shaping us into the image of Christ, there are going to be times when He forcefully does things to us, as well as times when He's gentle.

And the person through whom that correction comes from, should be looked upon as the rod and staff of God in that instance. That person is being used by God as a kindness towards us.

We should also realise that this correction will not always come from someone who is a leader, or from someone who we esteem as being more mature/insightful than us. Or even someone who we believe is wiser than us.

If another brother or sister disagrees with a belief we have or an action we are taking, its in our best interest to consider what theyre saying.

Apply their concern to scripture to see if perhaps we've gone astray from the lighted path that God set out for us via His word.

Quite often, we do not make our decisions based on reasoning through scriptures but rather our feelings and traditions.

'ive been doing this for years, so it must be right'

'my church has taught this for years, so it must be right'

'this pastor is so wise and insightful, and God is blessing his ministry, so he must be correct on this point'

'this person isnt even a leader or in ministry, and ive been a leader in ministry for years, so they dont know what theyre talking about'

'this is what i feel God has told me about, and i know that i hear the voice of God when i get in my prayer closet, so this must be correct'

We neglect the sure word of God... The one place that we know 100% that its God speaking... the one place that God has promised to speak through to equip and guide us, His scriptures - and replace that sure foundation with feelings, traditions, and subjective things like private visions and dreams.

Let us seek the Lord with our whole heart. Let us use every opportunity as a way to grow in the Lord. Let us consider every critic of our action or doctrine as possible tools of correction in the hands of the Lord.

And instead of getting on our high horse because someone disagrees with ME (dont they know how long ive been doing this) or getting vex because they spoke to ME in that way (dont they know im a child of the King?)...

... let us humble ourselves by thanking God for His kindness and His caring enough about us to send someone to correct us or to have us consider and check if we've been straying without realising it - even those we perceive as not on the same spiritual level as us (Gen 20).

Until we all attain to the unity of the faith within the fullness of Christ Jesus.

Grace and Peace

The Gospel Invitation

The Gospel invitation is not...

1. Ask Jesus into your heart

2. Make Jesus Lord of your life

3. Jesus is knocking on the door to your heart, let Him come in

The Gospel invitation is not even an invitation but a command.

And it is, the creator of the universe, who is Lord of lords, King of kings, and God of gods - entered into creation by becoming a human, taking the name Jesus

Lived a perfect life, obeying all the commands of the law that we break on a daily basis, in order to be declared righteous before God - fulfilling a myriad of prophecies as well

Died on the cross on our behalf, which was Him taking the full wrath/judgement/punishment of God that we have incurred (and will incur), which is the just penalty for breaking the commands of the creator of the universe

He ressurected on the third day after He was crucified publicly.

Showed himself to hundreds of people who saw Him die on the cross, proving that He arose from the dead.

And ascended into heaven to be seated at the right-hand of God the Father.

This man... This God... The person who was dead but is alive now and forever more.

The person who has power within Himself to lay His life down and to take back up again.

This person commands everyone everywhere to repent.

Turn from your sins and turn to Him in repentance.

For those who turn to Him in faith, believing what He says about Himself, He will save from the judgement that is to come - meaning He will grant them eternal life.

He will also cause them to be conformed more and more into the likeness of Himself.

So that they will love God more and more, and seek to obey Him and order their lives in a way that's pleasing to Him.

They will become children of righteousness. Sons and daughters of the most high God.

Adopted into God's family. Purchased by the blood of Christ, who saves His people from their sins.

That is the gospel we see proclaimed throughout the New Testament.

That is the gospel 'invatation' that we should be faithful to proclaim.
